Hair transplantation is a procedure in which a plastic or dermatological surgeon transfers hair to a bald area of the head. The surgeon usually moves the hair from the back or side of the head to the front or top of the head.
Hair transplantation usually takes place in the doctor's office under local anesthesia. Pattern baldness is responsible for most hair loss. It has to do with genetics. The remaining cases depend on various factors, including:
- diet
- stress
- illness
- hormonal imbalance
- medicines
There are two types of transplant procedures: slit grafts and micrografts. Split grafts have 4-10 hairs per graft. Micrografts consist of 1-2 hairs per graft, depending on the amount of coverage needed.
Two main methods are used to obtain follicles in transplantation:
1. DHI procedure - People with androgenetic alopecia, the most common type of hair loss, are the best candidates for hair implantation. This condition is usually called male or female pattern hair loss.
The following characteristics make you a good candidate for a hair transplant:
- Age. People undergoing hair transplantation must be over 25 years of age. By this age, hair loss is more unpredictable.
- Diameter of the hair. People with thicker hair usually get better results than people with thinner hair. Thicker hair covers more of each hair follicle.
- Donor hair density. Patients with a hair density of less than 40 follicles Trusted Source per square centimeter at the donor site are considered poor candidates for hair transplantation.
- Hair color. People with light hair or hair color close to skin tone often get the best results.
- Expectations. People with realistic expectations will be satisfied with their results
2. Follicular unit extraction (FUE):
- The surgeon makes small holes with a knife or needle in the area of your scalp receiving the hair transplant. They gently place the hairs in these holes.
- During one treatment session, the surgeon can transplant hundreds or even thousands of hairs.
- After that, the vaccine, gauze or bandage will remain on your scalp for a few days.
